The new Trello WYSIWYG editor is hot garbage, dumbed down to suit 20 yr old SMM managers who can't wrap their heads around Markdown.
For those who do know markdown, the new editor is less functional, less predictable and less usable.
- Overall, using the visual editor implies using your mouse or trackpad, and that negatively affects speed. When you do all (or most of) the formatting on the keyboard, like the Markdown enables you to, you can write text without your hands leaving the keyboard.
- When you type a link with the usual Markdown syntax
[]()
, inserting first the link title that you want between the[]
and then pasting the actual URL, it will pick up the link and convert it to the rich text thing, leaving the[]()
as literals. You have to manually edit the link to make it have the title you want. - Well, you click the link to edit it. But instead of focusing on the element, like you would expect in the editing mode, it instead takes you over to that link in a new browser window. You have to make extra clicks to close that window, then go back to Trello, and finally manually navigate into that link element with arrows, so that you can either break the link or edit it.
So, to disable it:
- Go to https://trello.com/labs and turn off the WYSIWYG Editing switch.
- When on a board, open any card. Click on the card description text area (needs to be description, not a comment) to bring it to the focus, then on the bottom right corner click Share feedback (more on feedback below). Finally, click Turn off.
I believe it is a good idea to complete both steps. The Labs switch should register this change for your whole account, and also reflect in their metrics.
Take a moment to let them know what do you think:
- The Share feedback button takes you to this survey https://surveys.atlassian.com/jfe/form/SV_0P4M70bpLYkz7xQ, so you can fill it in at any time
- Log on to https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Trello-questions/How-can-I-switch-off-the-new-Editor-It-s-catastrophic-in-my-case/qaq-p/2260763 to leave a public opinion
Be vocal about this now, because according to someone from the Trello/Atlassian Team,
(…) please be aware that in the coming months, we are permanently going to this new editor experience for all users so we do appreciate any feedback before then
I think they shey should permanently keep the plaintext editor. It solves the problem and comes at no additional development cost to them.
